Lighting and Effects

Lighting is a very important tool used in level design as it creates the overall atmosphere of the scene depending on the theme and overall visuals of the game. Different sources of light can prove beneficial in bringing your environment to life by creating realism and ambiance. The realism allows players to explore a dimensional world that is balanced and keeps everything in a realistic proportion. The atmosphere of the game can be easily and clearly presented by what lighting you use – choose wisely as these choices can affect genre you are wishing to portray (horror/adventure/happy/etc.).

Ways lighting can influence a level
-         Different light sources in the level (such as lamps, torches, screens, etc.) can make the level more interesting and realistic.
-         Different light colours can create the “mood” of the game as well as illuminate the setting of the scene (night/dusk/warm/cold). Choosing different colour tones can also highlight contrasts between areas and textures, making them more highlight/important/aware of.

-         Differing light intensities should balance as they will guide the player around the level and focus on important areas they must explore and might miss.
Assassins Crees Revelations is a great example of lighting. It's balanced and natural, there is attention to detail with light streaming in dim areas but not overpowering the scene, etc.
